Chabudai… Do you know it about the history?
In a Japanese general family of 1950-60’s, Chabudai may be said to be a symbol symbolizing the life of the family.
And Chabudai was drawn to the most when the life of the family was shown by the comics of this time.
And it attracts popularity again now in Japan.
It is as follows when we easily explain Chabudai.
It can fold a leg of Chabudai. And it is the small dining table which plural human beings surround it, and it can use. The kind of the form is circular, and there are a square, a rectangle. And the size of Chabudai has many things of around 60-90cm(23.6-35.4 inch). Therefore, it is superior in movement and storing.
History of Chabudai
In fact, the history of the model of Chabudai is very old. It was a table called Kouhai.(高杯) Kouhai changed on a small table to use it with an individual called Zen(膳) after the Heian era.(794-1192)
It was a complete class society in old Japan. Therefore, all japanese did not have a custom that people ate at the same table for a long period.
Therefore, Zen (膳) completely spread in the Edo era(1603-1868).
It was called Meimei-zen(銘銘膳). Meimei-zen gained a leg of a tray of the transportation.
In the days of Edo, the old Japanese ate in Meimei-zen at home. . . However, new culture was introduced by Western since it was the Meiji era(1869-1912). And tables were imported by Japan. The table was not received to a Japanese easily at first. However, the new government of the Meiji era pushed forward the modernization by the policy of the country.
A lot of tables which added a leg to be able to fold to appeared at the middle of the Meiji era. It may be said that this is a beginning of Chabudai.
And Chabudai is convenient to be able to be cleared up. It is superior in storing. Chabudai which the function of the leg to fold was added to seems to have spread very much as a Japanese general domestic dining table desk in about 1895-.
By the way, Zataku(座卓) spread in the Japanese general family in the Meiji era, too.
Zataku shortened the leg of a desk in China, and it was improved to match a Japanese style. It is the furniture of a rectangular guest room aimed at it being used on a tatami mat.
Chabudai was completely received in the Showa era (1926-1989) by a Japanese. And it was used in many families until about the first half of 1970’s.
However, Chabudai disappeared from Japan slowly when fashionable furniture attracted popularity from about the latter half of 1970’s.
However, it got popularity recently that Japanese fashion 1950-60 demanded the nostalgia of the generation.
Therefore, Chabudai revived by people in search of a nostalgic atmosphere again.
There is the Japanese room with all functions…It a bedroom, the study, a dining room, a living room.
Japanese use one room by many uses.
Therefore, Chabudai will be helpful enough now because it is superior in storing and movement.
